Lighthouse Therapeutic Community – a second chance for former drug and alcohol abusers
Lighthouse Therapeutic Community is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre in Retreat that offers a loving and caring environment to people going through the rehabilitation process. They can facilitate eight in-patients as well as additional day patients. Lighthouse relies solely on donations from the public, as most of their patients do not have medical aid and come from low-income families. As part of the rehabilitation process, the centre equips the patients with skills – like welding and sewing – that they can use to build a life outside the centre once they are well enough to leave. These items are sold in the community and the proceeds used to contribute towards the overhead costs. The centre also helps the patients find work once they are well enough to leave and continue to monitor their progress through weekly and monthly meetings.
We make a contribution to Lighthouse every month, which they use at their own discretion, for example for food or paying bills. We have also sponsored them with a welding machine and a sewing machine and other household and office items. We receive regular feedback from them on their progress and happenings at the centre.
